Faux Freckles in Oceanside: Cost, Healing, and How Long They Last
Some people are born with freckles. Some earn them over one long summer at the beach. And some of us spend years drawing them on with a brow pen, every morning, hoping they don’t smudge by lunch.
At PMU by the Sea in Oceanside, I place soft, semi-permanent freckles that look like they’ve always been yours, and fade gently over time instead of disappearing in the shower.
Here’s what to know before you book: the three coverage options, what they cost, how they heal, how long they last, and when it’s better to wait.
Quick answer: Faux freckles are tiny dots of cosmetic pigment placed just under the skin to mimic natural, sun-kissed freckles. At PMU by the Sea in Oceanside, CA, they cost $180 for light coverage, $250 for medium, and $350 for heavy. They look darker for the first one to two weeks, then soften as they heal, and typically last 2–5 years. Sun exposure, retinoids, and exfoliating acids are the biggest reasons they fade sooner. Individual results vary.
What are faux freckles?
Faux freckles, also called freckle tattoos or semi-permanent freckles, are a cosmetic permanent makeup treatment. I use a fine PMU device to place small dots of pigment in the upper layers of the skin, varying the size, spacing, and depth of color so no two look identical.
That variation is everything. Real freckles aren’t perfect circles in a neat pattern. My job is to design a pattern that follows your face, not a template.

A touch-up can be done from 21 days after the initial session, depending on healing and my assessment.
When comparing artists, look past the number. Ask to see healed freckles, not just fresh ones. Fresh work always looks crisp; healed work shows you how the artist actually places pigment.
What happens at your appointment
Most faux freckle appointments take about an hour and a half, including consultation and design. The freckling itself is quick. Most clients describe it as a light, prickly tapping, and the whole area is small.
We’ll choose one or two pigment shades matched to your skin tone and any natural freckles you already have. Using more than one shade is what keeps the result from looking stamped on.

Fresh vs. healed: why they look darker at first
Right after your appointment, your freckles will look darker, sharper, and slightly raised. This is normal. Pigment sits close to the surface while the skin repairs, and a thin layer of healing skin forms over each dot.
As that layer flakes away, the freckles soften into their healed color, usually 30–40% lighter than day one. They soften over the first one to two weeks, with the final color showing at four to six weeks. Healing and pigment retention vary.

How long do faux freckles last?
Faux freckles typically last 2–5 years. They don’t disappear overnight. They fade gradually, which is part of what makes them look natural. Many clients simply let them fade; others refresh them yearly when they start to look faint.
Where you land in that range comes down to your skin, your skincare, and, living here, the sun.
What makes faux freckles fade faster
Sun exposure. UV breaks down pigment. In a beach town, this is the big one. Once the area has healed, daily SPF 30+ on your face helps protect your freckles and your skin. Follow your aftercare instructions during healing.
Retinoids. Retinol, tretinoin, and other vitamin A products speed up skin cell turnover and can make freckles fade sooner. You don’t have to give them up long term, but expect lighter freckles over time if you use them nightly.
Exfoliation. Glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids, scrubs, and peels can accelerate fading. Keep acids off the freckled area if you want them to last.
Professional treatments. Chemical peels, microneedling, laser, and IPL over the area can fade or remove freckles. Tell any provider you have them.
Oily skin. Faux freckles can fade sooner on very oily skin because of how it holds pigment.
The flip side: if you love a fresh, bold look, a touch-up when needed can help maintain it. We’ll assess your healed results before adding more pigment.
Who shouldn’t get faux freckles (or should wait)
Faux freckles are a small treatment, but they’re still a tattoo. I’ll ask about your health and skincare at your consultation. These are the most common reasons I’ll suggest waiting or skipping it altogether.
Please wait if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6–12 months. Discuss timing with your prescribing clinician.
- Have an active breakout, rosacea flare, eczema, sunburn, or open skin in the area.
- Use retinoids or exfoliating acids on your face and haven’t stopped them for about one to two weeks beforehand. Check with your prescriber before pausing prescribed skincare.
- Have had Botox, filler, a peel, laser, or microneedling on the area recently. Confirm timing at your consultation.
- Are going through chemotherapy or radiation.
Talk to your doctor first if you:
- Take blood thinners. Never stop prescribed medication without your doctor’s guidance.
- Have a condition that affects healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or an autoimmune condition.
- Tend to form keloids or raised scars.
And honestly, think twice if:
You’ve never worn freckles before. Try drawing them on with a brow pen for a few weeks first. If you still love them every morning, you’re ready. If you find yourself wiping them off, that’s useful to know before they’re semi-permanent.
Clients must be 18 or older.
